Just a glimpse of me...

Do you ever feel STUCK? In 2000, I began looking for answers to some tough questions in my life. I'd searched high & low and finally conceded to search the promises found in the Bible. Those promises have sustained & guided me through the loss of a parent, the struggle with anxiety & depression, the loss of a valued relationship and so much more! I've found joy amid the pain. And, I want to share it with you!

Abigail - Wise and Determined 11-29-16

She was beautiful & intelligent... She was wise and determined to take action... She prevented disaster from happening to good people... She set a great example for those around her... She was ABIGAIL, wife of Nabal.

As some of you know, we became "backyard chicken" owners in the spring of 2015. We got 5 pullets (female chickens under the age of 1) when they were about 14 weeks old. Over the past 18+ months our 3.5 acre yard has become their home. I'd been advised by a friend who had grown up with chickens that I would be surprised by how much individual personality they exhibited. And... I was surprised.

I'd decided early on that I wanted to name the girls based upon their personalities & actions. So, I began observing them. While others tried to name them things like "Big Booty Judy", my mind was set upon using women's names from the Bible. I thought this could be a great lesson in the years to come for our then 2 year old "Little" one. A few names came to mind - as I was more familiar with their stories in the Bible. I consulted with my favorite female scholar & sister friend, Aunt Kimmy, for confirmation of my thoughts & additional name recommendations. I took notes of our conversation that day as we sat beside the cement pond. I still have those notes.

As the weeks went by, the first one to be named was Abigail. She was the first to allow the Little to pick her up. She was the first to jump on top of their "Spa". She was the first to investigate the perches I'd made inside their chicken run. She was the first to lead them back to the run and into the chicken coop at dusk. She was the first of many things. She was beautiful -- with 3 dominant white feathers at the base of each wing. The others seemed to put her in a place of leadership. She would often call out for them when a hawk was heard screeching in the distance.

We lost our Abigail to a predator the day before Thanksgiving. I was a bit surprised at how emotional I was over it. It was pretty traumatic seeing what that animal did to her. However, my sadness went deeper than that. I, an educated and most-of-the-time rational adult, had begun to see those chickens as more than mere wild animals.

I returned to the Bible to read the story of Abigail in the 25th chapter of 1 Samuel. And, I consulted a post from Bible Study Tools as I reflected upon the name I'd chosen for her in those early days. If you're able, take a few minutes to read the story in 1 Samuel 25. Also, here are a few excerpts from the Bible Study Tools post:
Abigail ("whose father is joy") definitely belongs in the study of great women of the Bible. She is the one (in our study) whom most people are less likely to know. Scripture presents her as a beautiful, intelligent woman whose lot in life is one of being married to a rich fool. Abigail reveals how wisdom and determined action need to partner in order to save good people from disaster. Being wise in itself may not be sufficient in some situations. Without taking immediate action, it is possible to simply stand by and watch destruction that could be avoided. Abigail was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance. She was both beautiful and intelligent. Except for her intervention, the obliteration of her husband and his household would surely have been the result. She stood in the gap protecting both parties. Her decisive action allowed life to continue. She seized the information given, understood what needed to be done, and then did it.
It appears that our Abigail lost her life in protecting the other 4 hens - who hid up in the branches of a thicket until I came calling for them. Although the outcome of our Abigail and the Abigail in the Old Testament are different, I see so many similarities between them. I am thankful that I felt led to name her ABIGAIL!

Let's Be Fair or Should We Be? #write31days 10-15-16

The thought came to me the other day (as I was, most likely, thinking about what other people should do):
If we EVER have a chance to help someone in need,

we SHOULD DO IT...

not based upon their merit,

but based upon our personal commitment

to living a life full of grace!

There are times when I can honestly say that I feel exactly that way. Lately I've had more times when I've been willing to sacrifice my wants to offer grace to someone who doesn't seem to deserve it. Yet, I would have to admit that most of my life I've lived a lifestyle of "fairness for others" instead of grace, forgiveness and mercy. I've wanted to give people what they fairly deserved. But, I don't want to be FAIR anymore. Because I don't want to accept FAIR for myself! I want to live a life of GRACE -- just as I have received!

Did I get what I deserved? Absolutely NOT! I have the promise of eternal life, without sorrow or pain. I have the promise of abundant life in this world. Do I deserve that based upon my "track record"? Not really. But, I am forgiven - because I sincerely asked God for forgiveness. I asked Him to walk with me daily & to convict me of what I needed to change -- fix -- improve.

God's love is never based upon what's fair. It's given lavishly to everyone whether they have earned it or not by their actions, words, choices, etc. He gives me the promise of heaven -- and glimpses of it here on earth (Eccl 3:11) & a world of it to come!

Should we be fair or extend grace? Let's be one of the unlikely people to speak wisdom & extend grace.

"May we be open to hearing wisdom from UNLIKELY PEOPLE and receiving grace in an UNEXPECTED PLACE." ~ Emily P. Freeman

Wounds Into Wisdom

Yesterday was a GLORY DAY for me & a dear loved one. And this morning I've been bathed in so many incredible thoughts & emotions... joy, thanksgiving, wonder & awe of God's timing & faithfulness. Oh, the mysteries of embracing God's timing to find peace!

I could say that I stumbled across a great quote this morning. But, I choose to say, "God lovingly placed this quote in front of me in His perfect timing with His loving faithfulness." When I saw the quote, I heard the following thought in my heart:
We can't do anything to change the past. The value of mistakes, hardships, poor choices, loss, pain, suffering and so much more is... to learn... to share... and to grow from them!
Today I'm reminded to allow God to work in & through everything that I face in life. He alone can...

Our Father God...
  • is at working in ALL things.
  • gives us beauty for ashes.
  • makes all things new.
  • keeps His promises.
  • completes what He's started.
  • is the ultimate healer.
  • and so much more!
Thank you God for your plan which wants our wounds to turn into wisdom!

How has God turned your wounds into wisdom? Feel free to comment here or message me privately.

the stuckinindiana crazy footnote: I seem to be on a HUGE kick lately... being a bit over-the-edge at matching photos I've taken with quotes and/or scriptures. I can't get enough of it. I keep asking God... why am I so compelled to do this?? For someone who was certain she was going to die before she was of 35 and has declared over & over that she's just not quite right, I always seem to wonder... "Am I doing this because I'm going to die soon & God needs me to get it done before going home to be with Him??"

The Wisest Man...

Who's the wisest man you know? Who's the wisest woman? Who among us is WISE?

Solomon wrote,

"In my search for wisdom, I tried to observe everything that goes on all across the earth. I discovered that there is ceaseless activity, day and night. This reminded me that no one can discover everything God has created in our world, no matter how hard they work at it. Not even the wisest people know everything, even if they say they do." Ecclesiastes 8:16 & 17

The New Living Translation (Study Application) Bible notes say...
"Even if he had access to all the world’s wisdom, the wisest man would know very little. No one can fully comprehend God and all that He has done, and there are always more questions than answers. But the unknown should not cast a shadow over our joy, faith, or work because we know that someone greater is in control and that we can put our trust in Him. Don’t let what you don’t know about the future destroy the joy God wants to give you today."

To me, that last statement, 'Don’t let what you don’t know about the future destroy the joy God wants to give you today', is priceless. I know little of the future. But, today, I choose JOY!

Crazy Questions! - 31 DAYS OF CRAZY - 28 October 2012

Which way is best? I don't know!
It's all so confusing.
How do we get the answers to our crazy questions?
  • What did I ever do to make my spouse seek out another?
  • Will I get a regular job or have to keep working 2-3 to make ends meet?
  • Why didn't my dad's cancer go into remission? Why did he have to die so soon?
  • When will I stop blaming my past for all the stupid choices I keep making?
  • Will the offer on that house be accepted or will I keep having to throw away money on this rental property?
  • When will I become pregnant and be able to carry a baby full term?  Why did that person get pregnant when they don't even deserve a baby?
  • What causes me to be so uptight when I'm in a group?  Why do I wake up & dread the day?
Life is full of questions.  And, it's not always full of answers!  But, there are many answers to be found when we look for them.  And, there is a peace that comes from believing that everything will work out for our good -- even when our questions aren't answered!

The past 10 weekends the pastoral staff at our church has spoken to the top 10 questions asked in an open forum. The surrounding Indianapolis metro community (and the world via the internet) was asked to submit questions to be answered during a special teaching series. No subject or question was off limits; and anyone could ask a question. A community panel, comprised of people who do not attend our church, selected the Top Ten questions. The questions were answered – one by one – in a Biblical frame during weekend worship services. The full list of questions is located on our website under:  Go Ahead Ask Anything 2

Today concluded the series with the number one question:
#1 – Homosexuality
  • Is homosexuality a sin? Can a person be a Christian and a homosexual?
  • What does the Bible say about how Christians should respond regarding the following issues related to homosexuality:  Today, it seems whenever you disagree with society, like you’re not in support of gay marriage; you are labeled a “hater.” How should Christians respond, in a Christ-honoring way, when you’re attacked for disagreeing with society’s new morality?
  • It is impossible for me to wrap my mind around other Christians who see millions of people that are gay and denounce their sexuality as evil and perverse.
  • How do Christians justify telling the LGBT population that their sexual orientation is unnatural and not in God’s plan when this is psychologically damaging and can lead to depression, suicidal thoughts, etc.?
  • How do people justify using religion as a “weapon” to deny equal marriage rights in this country even though homosexuality has been scientifically justified as naturally occurring?
  • How do you think God feels about an avowed homosexual accepting a pastoral position and preaching His Word?
How do you find the answers to the questions in your life?  Do you wonder... what would God say about this?  Post a question here & get some answers & some scripture references to back those answers.  Take a look at some of the scriptures below.

Life is full of questions... and there are answers to many of those questions!!  Seek wisdom... get answers.

His Words
(got this idea from Chase Tibbs' blog; using it because i love the words of God)
  • "If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking." James 1:5
  • "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened." Matthew 7:7-8
  • "And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers." Luke 2:47
  • "Oh, how great are God's riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways!"  Romans 11:33

As A Child... I Come!

Throw cares away & come to Him as a child
A scripture caught my eye today... "You have been taught the Holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive salvation that comes by trusting Christ Jesus." 2 Timothy 3:15

The first words "you have been taught the Holy Scriptures from childhood" really grabbed my attention. I was born into the home of parents serving in full-time Christian ministry. I was a "PK" - a preacher's kid. I was taught the Word from childhood through my entire lifetime at home.

As I entered young adulthood, did I remain faithful to what I'd been taught? Unfortunately… NO. I too frequently exercised my "free will" to question all the wonderful things that I had learned & seen lived out in my home as I was growing up. God allows that for all of us. We are given the choice to CHOOSE what we want to do. Often lessons are learned in the process. Many of our choices come with consequences - regardless of the lesson learned.

I've returned to walking daily with God & am so blessed to be in His loving care. However, some of the consequences of past choices can be seen & felt in my life from time to time even now. "I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn't receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it." is told in Mark 10:15I'm so glad that God suggests for us to have "child-like faith". Sometimes I just need that. Sometimes I just need to let go of past hurts & foolish decisions... and run to Him as a child would! I can come to Him freely, as a little child with no history of rebellion.

And TODAY, I come to Him as a child
"The LORD protects those of childlike faith; I was facing death, and He saved me." Psalm 116:6 NLT
